Brianâs parents, his grandmother, and his uncle were seated in the living-room when he got back to the house. He was carrying the bob-skates as he came out of the hallway.
âBeen skatinâ?â asked Sean.
Brian did not answer him. âUncle Sean asked you a question, Son,â said Maggie.
Seanâs big, freckled hand reached out to take one of the bob-skates. âDamn fool question,â said Sean. âFella doesnât skate with bob-skates. Had somebody pullinâ you, did you?â
Brian shook his head.
âWhatâs wrong, Spalpeen?â Brianâs father was looking at his tearstained face.
Brian rushed from the room.
âWhat do you mean?â Maggie turned to Sean. âWhatâs wrong with his skates? What did you mean ââ
âThey call âem skates,â said Sean. âCanât skate with âem. Just teaches kids a healthy respect for ice, thatâs all. Got no grip at all â skid like hell. Never forget the first time I took Gerald on ice with a pair â âbout the same age as Brian. He had one hell of a time â ended up hanginâ on to me coat tails, whilst I pulled him around.â
âBut â then that means that Brian â heâs ââ Maggie got up and went swiftly from the room.
She found Brian at the kitchen window.
âDonât they work, Son?â
Still looking out the window, Brian shook his head.
âArenât they what you wanted?â
âTubes,â he got out with difficulty. âLike in Harrisâs.â
âIâm sorry, Brian.â Maggie watched his shoulders moving. She turned his face around to her. âDonât â please donât! Iâll fix it!â
She went to the phone.
âMr. Harris? Have you a pair of â of tube skates left? Small size? I wonder if we â if you would come down to the store with me â my son â will you â will ââ
âMother!â
